3D Solid Modelling AutoCAD Training

Aims
This course is aimed at AutoCAD users who wish to use their 2D CAD knowledge to create 3D models for design or visualisation purposes. The course will show the delegate how to understand the 3D environment, create & edit 3D shapes and models and simple lighting, camera & rendering techniques. After attending the course delegates would be expected to be able to create various 3D rendered model in a variety of scenes & perspectives.

Exceptions
This is a beginners 3D course. The delegate will be introduced to all the basic concepts  of how to produce a rendered 3D model but they will not be given instruction on advanced techniques. Surface modelling is touched upon

Experience
Delegates should be familiar with working in AutoCAD or AutoCAD LT. We would recommend a minimum of one years recent continual experience before attending this course.

Duration
3 days but if we omit wireframe, surface modelling, rendering and drawing set ups e.g. 3D viewports etc. then the course can be reduced to 2 days. An additional day can be added for delegates who wish to continue and complete a follow on Rendering & Visualisation Course. Click on the rendering link for more details.

Location
Clacton-on-Sea, Essex (substantially reduced prices & virtually any date), London and other major East Anglian towns school holiday periods only (on site or hired venue)

Topics

Module 1: Why 3D?
We start the course by explaining to the delegate why we should use 3D, the advantages of 3D and how 3D Modelling Techniques differ to those of 2D drawing techniques. This is a worthwhile exercise as by having an understanding of 3D concepts from the start, the delegate will find the tasks in the following modules easier to complete.

Module 2: Viewing in 3D & the User Co-Ordinate System
As with 2D, how you move around your drawing, especially large area drawings or complex drawings can determine how efficient you are. With 3D a 3rd axis is used which presents a completely different way of viewing your drawing. As a result the UCS becomes far more important than in 2D. We will show you advanced UCS commands and how it is used to aid 3D viewing & shape creation.

Module 3: Surface Modelling
Although there are courses dedicated to it and this course is aimed at solid modelling, we will  briefly discuss surface modelling, what it is, its uses and how it can be used to create 3D shapes.

Module 4: Creating 3D Objects
We actually start drawing in 3D. You will be shown how 3D objects are created from the basic 3D shape tools and how to create 3D objects from 2D geometry.

Module 5: Editing 3D Objects
In 2D the power behind creating your drawing is to use the 2d editing tools such as copy, mirror, rotate etc. The same applies in 3D, but there are additional 3D editing tools. We will show you how to use the tools as well as how 2D editing commands can be used in your 3D drawing.

Module 6: Additional 3D View Commands
In module 2 we touched upon how 3D models are viewed differently but in this module we take it a stage further by introducing additional commands that may be specific to the model that you have drawn. These commands  are usually used in the design process to enable the user to see detail in awkward or in-accessible areas and/or to set up a view ready for rendering. It also covers how paperspace and viewports are used with 3D in mind.

Module 7: Rendering
This module covers the basic commands from start to finish on how to create a fully rendered model in a scene. This process involves adding lighting, materials, shadow, etc. and the editing commands that come with them.

Module 8: Visualisation & Rendering (Additional Day)
Should delegates wish to extend their Rendering capabilities we can tag the 1 day Visualisation & Rendering course onto the 3D course. There is a certain amount of overlapping and hence part of the afternoon session is set aside as practice where the delegate  can do some of their own work with the help of the instructor. This practice will take the form of the delegates drawing a simple 3D object of their choice with their new skills and  then  to render this object with the skills that they learnt in the morning
